Lukumi/Ayoba Weddings
CLBA has a firm commitment to
the restoration of traditional marriage. Colonial law in Cuba prohibited the
enslaved to have formal tribal marriages. Catholic marriage ultimately replaced
our own. Oral tradition indicates that some religious components of marriage
ceremony were preserved as a secondary feature. We now feel privileged to
announce that the restoration of marriage ceremony has been completed.
CLBA now offers a complete traditional marriage service. Marriage is a meaningful life event that expresses humankind’s’ most precious value, a commitment to a longstanding loving union. CLBA invites both bride and groom to share the special event of marriage with the orishas and your church. Each marriage gives us a renewed sense of hope and joy in celebration of religious freedom. Every marriage performed by CLBA is a constant reminder of the past. It also provides new generations with the opportunity to regain and experience their religious identity.

SPIRITUAL AND SOCIAL WEDDINGS
Marriage is one of the most
important spiritual events in life, not just a special loving union in a social
context. The starting point of a traditional wedding centers on the
spirituality of bride and groom. The orishas are consulted in a pre-wedding
divination session to evaluate the spiritual balances of the bride and groom.
The philosophical point of view is that marriage represents the bonding of two ancestral realities, the bride’s ancestral core and the groom’s. An important theme during divination is the diagnosis of possible spiritual imbalances and related treatment. The secondary concern is a form of spiritual negotiation. This is where the diviner seeks ancestral approval of marriage and ritual exchange take place on behalf of the bride and groom. Both ancestral cores are consulted separately and the diviner expresses the will of ancestors.
The third concern is where the diviner interprets the physical realities of the marriage. Advice is given to the bride and groom on important aspects of marriage, personality compatibility traits, incompatibility traits, future prosperity matters, procreation, ethics & morals, health, and other related issues. This extensive guidance helps the couple to focus on their life commitment of loving and sharing. It also ensures the couple that their individual destiny in this lifetime is being fulfilled. Essentially, divination serves as a tool for checks & balances prior to the wedding.
Upon completion of all details, the couple makes the arrangements with the diviner for all spiritual requirements for the marriage. The second part of the marriage addresses all matters relating to the social aspect, that is, the socio-religious part of the wedding. At this juncture the families prepare this special event according to their means and desires, and in coordination with the requirements of the officiating priest or priestess. An interesting feature of traditional weddings is they can be performed at the Church or any preferred location.
